Phil Hughes by far, pitched better than he had in starts number one and two.

Thursday night against the Arizona Diamondbacks, Hughes went 7 strong innings, which basically doubled his season innings total. While striking out 6, and surrendering 2 runs on 6 hits.

Two of those hits were solo homeruns by Didi Gregorious and Martin Prado. Both homeruns were the only mistakes that Hughes had made all night.

Showing impressive velocity at 93-94 mph, Hughes also showed the command to go with. By not walking a single batter over the 7 innings.

Though even with the solid performance, he was only given one run in support, when Robinson Camp went deep in the 6th off the D-Backs young lefty, Patrick Corbin.

Regardless of getting the win or loss, Hughes gave the Yankees some encouragement after firing two ineffective starts to begin the season.

His next test in battle will be in Tampa next week, to face an always challenging Rays lineup.
