After losing to the Tigers, 8-2, Friday afternoon, the Yankees called upon Phil Hughes to make his season debut, on a cold and windy day in Detroit.

Hughes ran into a little bit of trouble in the first inning. After a couple runners reach base, Prince Fielder hit a sac-fly to center field, bringing Austin Jackson home.

Hughes left in the fifth, after giving up 3 straight hits to begin the inning. His line finished at, 4 innings, with 3 runs, on 8 hits, and 4 K's.

Leaving Andy pettite of the only Yankee starter to go past five innings in a start, so far this year.

Boone Logan was Hughes' relief, yet he could only manage to retire one, of the three hitters he faced.

So David Phelps who was originally scheduled to start, was called on. Were he served through 2 and 2/3 innings, giving up two runs, on six hits.

Max Scherzer was the Tigers starter and exit in the sixth, after allowing a Travis Hafner RBI single up the middle, driving in Robinson Cano. Scherzer pitched five innings, giving up four runs, on five hits, and struck out seven Yankee hitters.

Once Jim Leland handed the ball off to his bullpen, the Yankees would score no more. Over four innings, Al Albuquerque, Darin Downs and Joaquin Benoit combine for no runs, on only one hit.

Benoit shutdown the Yankees 1-2-3 in the ninth, ceiling in 8-4 Tigers victory.

Some notables in the game include Vernon Wells, who hit a solo home run in a 2nd. Lyle Overbay went 2 for 4, with a 2-run single in the 6th. Miguel Cabrera reached base 5 times going, 4 for 4. Austin Jackson and Torii hunter each went 3 for 5. Prince Fielder and Andy Dirks each drove in a pair of runs.

After falling to 1-4 on the year, the Yankees will turn to CC Sabathia, hoping he can improve on his rough opening day start. He'll oppose Tigers ace Justin Verlander, Sunday at 1:05 ET.
